I remember the first time I tried to file my Umbrella Cockatoo Marshmellow’s nails and I filed one of her nails too short and it started to bleed. Being a new bird owner I did not know what to do. My first instinct was to call the bird store where I purchased Marshmellow. They told me to place Marmellow’s toe nail into a bar of soap to stop the bleeding. This is the quickest way to stop a bleeding nail on a bird in an emergency. Kwik Stop is an essential first aid powder that quickly stops the bleeding. Of course, at the time I did not know about Kwik Stop so the soap really helped.
Below is a great article from Pet Age magazine on First Aid and your Pet Bird by Susan Clubb. There are many good tips for the new bird owner as well the more experienced bird owner.
If you know of any other first aid information for our feathered friends that is not mentioned in this article I would love to hear from you.
