Nothing is more enjoyable than watching your feathered friend devour a delicious snack while on his parrot gym. Most bird owner will do far more than provide their feathered friend with a bowl of bird seed each day. Instead, they will offer their bird a wide variety of healthy, delicious foods. These snacks can be fed in spurts throughout the day. If you are making a crisp, green salad for dinner, why not offer a few leaves to your parrot? If you are making a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast, give your pet a spoonful to enjoy. However, there are certain foods that you should never give your bird, as they can cause severe illness and even death. Here are 3 foods that should be avoided at all costs:
1. Chocolate. Although your parrot may be sitting on the top her bird perch or bird stands, eyeing that candy bar you are eating, do not give in to those piercing eyes. Chocolate is extremely toxic to birds. It can cause vomiting, seizures and death. So keep your candy bars and M&M’s carefully tucked away where your bird cannot reach them. Be careful never to leave a bag of chocolate on a table where they are accessible to your bird. Your parrot could scamper down from their bird cage and snag a beak-full—with disastrous results. I even make sure that I wash my hands well after eating any chocolate to make sure there is no residue left for my bird to lick off my fingers.
2. Apple seeds. Yes, fruit is generally healthy for parrots. If you want to share a few slices of fruit with your bird as they are perched on their bird playgym, feel free to do so. Just be sure to avoid feeding them any apple seeds. These seeds contain a toxic substance called Cyanide. Peach seeds as well as cherry pits should also be avoided for the same reason.
3. Caffeine. If you’re tempted to share your soda or carbonated drink with your bird, think again. Caffeine can cause severe heart problems and cardiac arrest in birds. If you are hosting a party where there are a lot of caffeinated beverages, make sure your bird is safely out of the way. You may want to place his bird stand in another room where he can play until the party is over. If you want to share a tasty drink with your pet, offer him a sip of fruit or vegetable juice.
