Our Quaker Parrot "Phantom"

Quaker parrots make excellent feathered friends.  They love bird toys…..so keep plenty of these around to keep them happily entertained. They have sweet, docile personalities and bond very closely to their owner or primary caregiver.

The Quaker Personality
Quakers are social birds who get along well with other parrots. They are confident in nature, yet extremely affectionate. They have great personalities and will never cease to entertain you. Just give your feathered friend some bird toys and watch him play!! You’ll be entertained for hours. They are bright green in color with gray facial markings. As these birds become more popular, other color variations are becoming available.

Caring for a Quaker
These parrots are among the easiest to care for. Just make sure you feed a wholesome diet with plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and legumes.  If you do that, you’re almost guaranteed to have a happy, loyal and fun-loving Quaker parrot who loves his life.

Our Quaker parrot “Phantom” passed away in October 2011 from Cancer.  He was the most fun loving bird…..he loved to “Dance” (He would move his little feet up and down when you made clicking sounds).  Phantom was also able to play ring toss…..he played it his way though……watch video below to see him having a ball playing with his Ring Toss.

• Spend more time with you bird. Parrots are social creatures that thrive on attention. They love human companionship and desperately need social interaction. If you have found yourself so busy with other things—such as work, friends and a social life of your own, that you have little time to spend with your bird, make a New Year’s resolution to change that. A few extra minutes here and there can make all the difference. For example, schedule a 15 minute play session with your parrot before heading off to work. Find some stimulating bird toys for your feathered friend or think up a new trick to teach your parrot.
• Feed more fresh food. Sometimes we get so busy it is easier to throw your parrot a bowlful of pellets than to chop up fresh fruits and veggies. However, parrots need a diet that is rich in fresh, wholesome foods. While pelleted formulas can be nutritious, you should supplement with fruits, vegetables, pasta and other delicacies. Every time you go grocery shopping for yourself, pick up a few items for your bird. When shopping the produce aisle, grab some extra bananas, mango, papaya, peppers or Kale for your bird. By adding fresh produce to your bird’s diet, you will help increase their overall health and longevity.
• Buy new bird toys regularly. Parrots get bored easily. They need new experiences to help keep their minds fresh and alert. The best way to satisfy your parrot’s incessant curiosity is to purchase new and intriguing bird toys on a regular basis.
• Buy a parrot playstand. A parrot playstand is ideal for keeping your birds entertained. They can climb, dance, chew and toss a number of different toys to their hearts content. By making a few, everyday changes to your parrot’s routine and lifestyle, you can turn him into the happiest bird on the block.

Healthy Beak of a Parrot

A bird’s beak is an extremely important piece of equipment. Parrots use their beaks to grind up food, play and climb. As a result it is important keep your parrot’s beak healthy and in good condition.

Here are a few signs of a healthy beak:

1. It should be smooth. As you watch your bird play on his parrot playgym , take some time to carefully observe his beak. Does it look smooth and shiny? Or dull and crusty?

In cases with Cockatoos their beaks have a coating of dander on them.  I remember going to our vet when Marshmellow our Cockatoo (Featured above hamming it up for the camera (LOL)) was a year old and her beak wasn’t “shiny” anymore.  I asked if she was okay and our vet said “this is a sign of a healthy Cockatoo….you want to see her beak have this dander on it.  This means that her feathers are healthy. “

2. There should be no discoloration. A healthy beak should have robust, consistent coloring.

3. The beak should be properly aligned. Both the top and bottom beak should fit together perfectly. The beak should not be too short or too long. In some cases, parrots may develop what is called a scissor beak. This is when only one side of the beak grows.

In some cases, your feathered friend can carry some of his/her last meal on their beak as pictured below on our DYH Amazon parrot “Kiwi”.  “Kiwi” loves to really get “into” his meal as you can see.  Mommy to the rescue….nothing a wet paper towel can’t clean.  (LOL)
